Skin no surgical hair thickening: what is it and what are its pros and cons

Have you ever seen our catalogue?

The no surgical hair thickening as you know can have different bases and different construction.

Among the most requested ones there is skin also known as pu.

Skin is a polyurethane, similar to a film, in which hairs are inserted by hand, one by one, so as to recreate the customer’s hair perfectly.

This film has different thicknesses. It starts from the very thin 0,02, a completely invisible and impalpable polyurethane. Then there is the thin 0,04, a slightly thicker skin but always having great invisibility. Passing from the medium 0,06 -0,08 which guarantees enough invisibility and excellent durability, to the thick 0,12.

Clearly the thinner the skin, the more natural is, but at the same time it is more fragile. Whereas the thicker, the more resistant it is, but unfortunately less invisible and more prone to be discovered by touch.

A super thin skin system lasts on average from one to four months. Whereas a medium one goes from three to eight months. And a thick one from six to eighteen months.

The film or polyurethane has a transparent opaque color, no shine, which, in contact with the skin, completely disappears, as you can see from the following photo

If you want, there are different colors, such as light pink, white or light brown. But we of Newlacecu recommend the transparent opaque one, which adapts to all kind of skin colors and, as you can see from the photos, it perfectly disappears once completely stuck to the customer’s skin.

Hairs, as we said, are inserted by hand and there are different kind of insertion, some knotted others injected.

The knotted insertion can be:

  • simple knotted: in that case a real knot is created, similar to the lace one, but doesn’t need to be bleached.
  • v loop: when the hair is inserted just like a V.
  • j lop: the best one for super thin bases, where the hair is inserted in a similar way to a J.

Hairs inserted using injection instead, can have different kind of injection as well.

The injection consists in inserting the hair in the skin and then spreading a layer of glue in it which solidifies and makes the hair adhere to the base in a short time.

Here you can see the effect of a base with injected skin.

Skin no surgical hair thickening: what is it and what are its pros and consThe injected skin, unlike the knotted one, guarantees a more natural hair output from the base, perfectly recreating the skin effect.

It is, however, slightly thicker, the minimum thickness is 0,05.

Injections can be, as we said, of different types:

  • Flat injection: when hairs are inserted almost parallel to the base.
  • Semi volume injection: when they are inserted with a 45 degree angle.
  • Total volume injection: when they are inserted perpendicular to the base.

We recommend injecting one or two hairs per injection. But some companies perform in tuft injections, that is an injection of 10 -20 hairs. Certainly more resistant as injection, but also much less natural.

A customer who orders a skin system can also ask for different type of insertion method on different areas of the system.

For example:

To have a completely invisible front you can ask for a 0,5 cm jlop in the front, then in the back a 45 degree semi volume injection and finally, for the crown, a perpendicular injection. Whereas to adapt the sides to native hairs for all the perimeter a flat injection.

Clearly, for the stock system you can find in the link below, those precautions are already provided in order to guarantee the customer the best of the best.

But what are benefits and downsides of a skin or polyurethane system?

Let’s list them below:

Skin system pros

  1. Perfect adhesion. Indeed, having more adhesion surface compared to lace, which is a net, the adhesive force will be greater. So it is a perfect system for those who want a strong adhesion, such as competitive sportsmen and people who sweat a lot.
  2. Ease of cleaning. Skin systems are a lot easier to clean compared to lace ones. Often solvents aren’t even necessary to remove glue residue from the base, but some water and some neutral soap are enough.
  3. Easier to use. Compared to lace they are easier to handle and use, thus more suitable for customers with low dexterity or who prefer easy maintenance.
  4. Glue doesn’t go through the base. Often, in lace and monofilament systems, glue pass through the base and affects hair roots if maintenance isn’t performed well. That inconvenience doesn’t happen with skin systems.

Skin system cons

  1. Lower Since it is a film and not a tulle, transpiration is lower, therefore it is not a suitable system for those who suffer low breathability a lot.
  2. Less invisible front. Lace is completely invisible, a medium or thick skin is not, whereas if very thin or thin it is completely invisible.
  3. Less impalpable touch. Medium or thick skin is subject to be discovered by touch, if someone touches our head. So that is an element which must be considered when ordering.

Like all systems, we can’t say skin systems are the best ones. We need try them and subjectively see if they are suitable for our specific needs.

Hair systems, indeed, are a cosmetic artifact and so it’s up to the customer to see if they meet his or her subjective needs, with practice test and real use.
